What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy can be different things.

It can be relaxation, rejuvenation, meditation, wellness, or all of these things.

It can be pain management, stress relief, coping with chronic conditions, or learning to master the conditions of a disorder.

Everyone is different and everyone deserves massage therapy that is fitted to their needs. At Portal to Wellness we take a very broad approach to Massage Therapy to treat the entire body, as well as a broad knowledge of modalities and perspectives on wellness.

Massage Therapy is the use of massage to encourage and facilitate the bodies natural means of recovery. Our bodies need help coping with all that we have to put them though. We all need a chance to relax and give ourselves the self care we need to recover.

Between our responsibilities to our families and our careers it is very difficult to keep up with the effort we need to function. This is why it is so hard to keep up with our hobbies and our personal aspirations, because we are so exhausted from keeping up.

Massage Therapy gives us all a chance to relax and give back to our body which has carried us through so much struggle. Try massage therapy and you will see that it is more than a luxury, it is a necessary component of our wellness to keeping up in our modern world.

“Under the present brutal and primitive conditions on this planet,

every person you meet should be regarded as one of the walking wounded.”

- Robert Anton Wilson

Medical Massage

vs.

Therapeutic Massage

Medical Massage and Therapeutic Massage are very similar but also have key differences.

Therapeutic Massage is the typical type of massage you are familiar with. When someone comes for Therapeutic Massage I have comfortable sheets on the bed and I recommend the client takes off everything but their under ware. (As long as they are comfortable.) The massage itself has an even focus on relaxation and pain management. I have incorporated medical massage techniques, so my client will gain the benefit of those and will only have to participate in a few stretches if they are comfortable doing so.

Medical Massage feels more like physical therapy. I ask clients to wear a comfortable shirt and shorts. Medical massages uses Manual Therapy, which can include cupping, myofascial work, pin and stretch techniques and others. This kind of therapy requires more action on the part of the client, and focuses entirely on restoring muscles and range of motion.

Pin and Stretch is a technique that helps release and restore muscles by helping the muscle fibers slide past one another. So much of our muscle soreness is caused by our muscles being inundated with our bodies nature waste products. Even the muscle fibers themselves are broken and then consumed by our bodies when we exercise. Pin and Stretch helps to separate the fibers so the circulation can return and heal the muscles naturally.

For first timers, a one hour Therapeutic Massage is always a good option. If you have a major issue, are referred by a doctor, or just want very targeted therapy, inquire about medical massage.

Your evaluation

Every massage comes with an evaluation. As a medical massage practitioner I can offer an in depth understanding of the movements and condition of your body. Massage therapists are also a fantastic source of knowledge and understanding about the body, and I try to offer as might insight as possible.

Every time you receive a massage, there will be a written evaluation so your progress can be tracked over time. Step by step your therapist will help you along the way to wellness.

When you are a client of Portal to Wellness, you will see the benefits in your wellness stretch out and affect your entire life.
